  Back to Quartets

On a sunny day, this bay and these mangrove islands are full of colour. But a backlit grey overcast morning like this sucks out all the colour, leaving us with barely more than monochrome compositions, studies in silver.

These images look like they could have taken hours to get, they have such formal tranquility, and such precision. Did I wait until the light was just right? Did I drive up and down the foreshore looking for just the right angle? Did I plan to go to this place on just such a grey day? No, I did not, The truth is they were all shot snap, snap, snap, in less than two minutes from exactly the same place – the back of a water taxi, just before it cast off. I just happened momentarily to be in that place on my way to somewhere else. Compositions like these are all around you. All the time. You just have to have a camera with you and in your hand. Not in your camera bag. In your hand.
