Nobody ever sees themselves from this angle, so they are never self-conscious of the way they appear from above. And although these are obviously pictures of real people, they are not instantly recognisable as individuals so they also work as anonymous sequences of semi-abstract shapes and colours.

It’s important never to look furtive when you are taking pictures of people in public places like this. If you are open and bold nobody will stop you – except sometimes the shopping centre security staff, who stop you because you didn’t ask their permission to take photographs inside their domain. When security people approach you, smile and move on. You can always come back another day.
