One of the first things we do in life is recognize different human faces, particularly our mother’s face. It is a skill that is hard-wired into us, and we can’t help seeing faces everywhere, even in inanimate objects. Once my brain had interpreted the first one of these bollards on Wellington harbour as a face, suddenly I was surrounded by hundreds of these cuddly little people, each with a unique personality.
